Proper loading pins are pretty good, but there is a bit of money to be saved if you have a welder or pipe threader. I have a pipe threader so I can put a flange on the end of a piece of pipe/scaffolding. I then just drill a hole through the top so that I can fit a wide-jaw shackle.
